The Start of Nitro and the Monday Night Wars
September 4, 2017
22 Years ago today Monday Night Nitro made its first appearance in the Mall of America in Minneapolis. Many top wrestlers were performing that night including Brian Pillman, Jushin Thunder Liger, Ric Flair, and Sting. Big Bubba battled Hulk Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship and though it was a tough battle, the red and yellow prevailed with flying colors. Just as everything seemed well, pandemonium broke out in the ring and Hulk was trying to deal with all the wrestlers rushing at him. All of a sudden Lex Luger shocked the wrestling world as he jumped into the ring and started laying a beat down as well. After clearing the ring and bumping into each other, it seemed as if another fight would start as Sting and Macho had to hold back the two. Finally Hulk agreed to accept Luger’s challenge for the belt next Monday Night Nitro. This came particularity shocking as the previous evening Luger did a show on WWF. This gave Monday Night Nitro a sense of “anything can happen” which was justified in the following years. Just thinking back on this has makes me excited for what the future of wrestling has in store for us.
