It was Mr. Wonderful and Hulk Hogan against the world – a tag team pairing that was ready and able to take down King Kong Bundy and his buddy Big John Studd for good. Then the phone rang…
On one end was an irate Paul Orndorff; fuming after hearing the needling words of Adrian Adonis and feeling desperate for recognition. On the other end was the Hulkster in the middle of squatting a small mountain at the gym. The misstep in communication was just a fact of life for Hogan, but to Orndorff, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
With Adonis in his head drumming up drama, the die was cast for a match that would become known as ‘The Great Betrayal’. The dream team of Hogan and Mr. Wonderful was crumbling at the foundation, and Orndorff was ready for it.
The match saw Orndorff fail to slam Big John Studd after hyping the crowd, eventually tagging in Hogan to face Studd alone. With a quick scoop, Hogan made the slam and a furious Orndorff stamped his feet at the side of the ring. Bobby Heenan’s prized talents stormed the ring; disqualifying them from the match and serving the Hulkster a merciless booting in retaliation. After a lunge by the Hulkster accidentally threw Mr. Wonderful from the ropes, fans held their breath as the stunned Orndorff ducked the ropes and approached the devastated Hogan.
Brother, what happened next still gives the Hulkamaniacs chills to think about.
